Consumer Protection Laws
All over the world, Consumers being unaware and uneducated to their rights; are considered the vulnerable part of a business transition. Consumer protection laws, in general, are meant to endorse fair competition, passing of candid information, availability of quality goods and services, and endow rules for prompt and due justice. Consumers are a key pillar of present economic structure. Consumer satisfaction is the main characteristic of urbanized markets. It restrains every kind of twisted information, vending of substandard goods and full disclosure regarding quality and extent of services. Consumers, in Pakistan, are the feeblest faction of people. Lack of awareness of consumer rights, gap between the available consumer laws and the lack of determination to implement those laws play important role in their vulnerability.
In today’s technologically advanced world, consumers are barraged with advertising for the “next best thing.” Sometimes these products don’t live up to their promises. And, sometimes, when consumers complain about disappointing or defective products, companies put a deaf ear to the genuine complaint of their consumers. In these instances, consumers can turn to the law to recover their wasted money and other damages. The law prohibits corporations from selling defective products, falsely advertising their products, or refusing to honor the promises in their warranties. The law also prohibits individual or entities from providing a faulty service.

- False Advertisement: Companies are prohibited from making false or misleading statements when selling consumer goods. The law not only prevent companies from lying to their customers, but also from omitting information that is essential to a purchase decision, such as hidden fees or surcharges.
- Defective Products: Corporations are prohibited from selling products that are defective. Some defects stem from a flaw in the design of the product; some defects reflect a manufacturing problem; other defects are in the warnings or instructions that accompany the product.
- Defective service: Services or the results of any service which is not in conformity with the order, are of inferior quality or workmanship or are otherwise unsatisfactory can trigger a consumer complaint. A provider of service shall be liable to a consumer for damages proximately caused by the provision of service.
- Breach of Warranty: When a consumer pays for a product, that transaction creates an understanding and expectations about the condition of the product that will be received in return. Many products come with a written warranty, but the law recognizes a much broader implied warranty for most transactions. If a company fails to honor its warranties, the law permits consumers to file complaint and seek compensation.
- Fraudulent Billing: A utility service provider is bound to issue bill to a consumer for what he or she has actually consumed and they are prohibited from excessive billing and hidden charges.
- If manufacturing date, expiry date and ingredients are not mentioned over packing.
- If the consumer has experienced bad service by any govt. or private organization/individual.
- Non exhibition of price list.
- Non issuance of receipt to the purchaser.
- Other types of unfair or deceptive business practices provided by the law.
